The University of Canterbury (UC) is New Zealand’s second oldest university, established as a college of the former University of New Zealand in in 1873. The university is located on New Zealand’s South Island, in the city of Christchurch. UC is proud of the quality of its research, hosting research centres in fields such as atmospheric research, aquaculture and marine ecology, bioengineering and earthquake studies.

UC is a large single-campus university set on an 87-hectare site in the suburb of Ilam, which is around five kilometres from the Christchurch city centre. It offers a wide range of courses across the colleges of Arts, Business and Law, Engineering, Science and Education. The campus boasts an extensive range of facilities and resources, including modern teaching spaces; cafés, restaurants and bars; a recreation centre; four libraries; an art gallery; and amenities such as a health centre, pharmacy, post office and bookshop.

Ilam is just 20 minutes’ drive to the coast and not far from the region’s famous ski fields. There is plenty on offer in the city centre, including opportunities to attend local events and festivals. There are several accommodation options for students interested in living on or close to campus, including two student villages and a mixture of self-catered and fully catered halls of residence.
