Introduction and Background

CDPM becomes the Stand Alone Centre in South Asia to Offer Degree Program in Disaster Management October 4, 2011.

Keeping in view this target the Centre for Disaster Preparedness and Management (the only public sector institute in the country offering independent courses in the field of Disaster Preparedness and Management) took the initiative to start MS / M. Phil. leading to Ph. D. programme in the field of Disaster Preparedness and Management. This programme is unique in the sense that it is more specialized as well as multidisciplinary and advanced in its nature and will focus on hazard and risk assessment, research and analytical methods, climate change, global warming, disaster planning and management, hazard risk and vulnerability mapping and economic, health, gender and psychological issues in disaster.

Objectives of CDPM at Peshawar University

To impart training and enhance knowledge of the faculty, students, students, staff of relevant departments and selected citizens in disaster risk reduction, preparedness and management.

  • To develop qualified human resource base in the field of Disaster Management.
  • To provide policy guidelines for line agencies working in the field of disaster management.
  • To produce knowledge base in Disaster Management in Pakistan.
  • To help in reducing the impacts of disasters on people and their properties

BS (4 Years) in Disaster Management

The Centre for Disaster Preparedness and Management, University of Peshawar offers BS (4 Years) Programme in Disaster Management. A student is required to complete 136 credit hours. The normal duration of the completion of BS programme in Disaster Management will be 08 Semesters. Beside taught course the student will also write a research report or conduct internship of 2+1 credit hour.

Eligibility Criteria BS (4 Years)

FA (with Civics and Economics)/F.Sc/Inter Science/DAE/D.Com with at least 45 % marks in aggregate.

M.Sc. in Disaster Management

The Centre for Disaster Preparedness and Management, University of Peshawar offers M.Sc Programme in Disaster Management. A student is required to complete two years taught course under the University's conventional system. The normal duration of the completion of M.Sc. in Disaster Management will be 02 Years, i.e. Previous Year and Final Year. Beside the taught course students will also write a thesis as a partial fulfillment for the requirement of M.Sc. in Disaster Management.

Eligibility Criteria for M.Sc. in Disaster Management

Bachelor Degree with Botany, Commerce, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Economics, Forestry, Geography, Geology, Home Economics, Political Sciences, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Statistics, and Zoology with at least 45 % marks in aggregate.

MS / M. Phil. leading to Ph. D. programme

The basic objective of MS / M. Phil. leading to Ph. D. programme is to mainstream disaster management education with the relevant disciplines. It also aims at the development of qualified human resource base in the field of disaster preparedness and management. Besides this, offering MS / M. Phil. leading to Ph. D. programme would enable CDPM to achieve its mandated tasks of education, research and policy advice to the government in an efficient and effective way.

Eligibility Criteria

Priority will be given to candidates having 16 Years of Education in Disaster Management. Candidates having M.A. / M.Sc. / 4 Years B.S. in Earth and Environmental Sciences, Biological Sciences, Management Sciences, Agriculture Sciences, Medical Sciences, Economics, Sociology, Social Work, Psychology, Anthropology, Forestry, Architecture, Gender Studies, Journalism and Mass Communication, Civil / Earthquake / Mining Engineering, City / Urban & Regional Planning can also apply.

Post Graduate Diploma in Disaster Preparedness and Management

The objective of the diploma programme includes:

  • To impart training and transfer knowledge to the faculty, students, staff of relevant departments and selected citizens in disaster risk reduction, preparedness, management and mitigation;
  • To develop qualified human resource base in the subject;
  • To produce knowledge base on disasters in Pakistan.

Course structure:

  • Semester I: Four and a half months
  • Semester II: Four and a half months
  • Research Project: Three Months
