Meet the Acer CloudMobile S500, a budget Android phone with specs that are not to be sniffed at. For just £179.99 SIM-free, you get a 4.3-inch HD screen powered by a speedy dual-core 1.5GHz processor, plus all the apps Android can handle. Is this a match made in wallet-conscious heaven? Let’s take a look.

The Good

For the price, Acer’s hardware is as good as it gets. Period. The 4.3-inch 720p screen is absolutely superb - you can’t make out the individual pixels. Add to that the ability to output the screen to a telly via HDMI, and you’re onto a winner. The plastic build itself isn’t exactly sexy, but it’s solidly made, and the curved design reminds of us lots of recent Sony Xperia Android phones - no bad thing.

Acer’s mild tweaking of Android is a shining example of how to not ruin Google’s open-source operating system, as companies like HTC and Samsung still insist on doing with their confusing overlays. This is Android, but better, with extra settings options built into the pull down notification tray and the superb Swype keyboard as default - and it’s all blindingly fast courtesy of the whizzy silicon.

Then there’s the massive Android eco-system. While the cheerful Nokia Lumia 620 remains our favourite affordable smartphone for beginners, Windows Phone 8’s distinct lack of apps means that if you’re a tech aficionado on a budget, you’ll get much more out of the Google Play store’s 700,000+ apps on the Acer CloudMobile S500.
